Rocket Mobile Wins Best Value Mobile Provider for Third Year Running at NZ Compare Awards

Rocket Mobile Wins Best Value Mobile Provider for Third Year Running at NZ Compare Awards

Rocket Mobile has once again been crowned Best Value Mobile Provider at the 2025 NZ Compare Awards, marking the brand’s third consecutive win and reaffirming its position as New Zealand’s leader in transparent, everyday mobile value.
Rocket Mobile NZ’s Head of Mobile, James Whittome, says the award reflects both the company’s customer-centric approach, and the momentum it has built since launching.
“Winning for the third year in a row is an incredible endorsement from both the industry and our customers,” says Whittome.
Over the past 12 months, Rocket Mobile’s subscriber base grew, driven by a wave of digital-savvy customers switching for better value. Whittome says this is especially noteworthy given Rocket’s size relative to New Zealand’s major operators.
“We don’t have the scale of the big telcos, so we’ve focused on smarter systems and customer control,” he says. “Our app and MyAccount make it incredibly easy to start, switch or cancel. There are no credit checks, no voicemail fees, no card surcharges, no 28-day billing cycles-just full-month pricing and unlimited data at different speeds.”
The brand’s speed-tiered unlimited mobile plans, a model Rocket Mobile pioneered in New Zealand, continue to resonate with value-conscious users looking for predictable performance without fine print. Several newer entrants have since adopted similar structures, further validating the approach.
“This year we saw customers using their mobile data more than ever,” says Whittome. “According to both our own data and research from the Commerce Commission, average data usage grew. That’s the clearest indicator that people feel confident using their phones without data rationing. Value should be ongoing, not just when you sign up.”
Rocket Mobile has also seen rapid uptake of Group Plans, which allow families and friends to mix and match plans across different accounts, with every connection receiving a discount, and no companion-plan catches.
Whittome says the NZ Compare win is a marker of strong progress, but there is more to come.
“We exist to give Kiwis unlimited data at fair prices, without fine print. Our job now is to keep leading on everyday value. We’ve got exciting new enhancements coming in 2026 that will continue to raise the bar, and keep driving competition in a market that desperately needs it.”

Rocket Mobile Tops List Of Lowest Priced Plans in Latest ComCom Report

Rocket Mobile Tops List Of Lowest Priced Plans in Latest ComCom Report

10 July 2025

Rocket Mobile’s unlimited data plans have topped the list of the lowest cost mobile plans in New Zealand, in the latest Telecommunications Monitoring Report released by the Commerce Commission.

Based on price per GB, Rocket Mobile’s unlimited data plans were ranked first, second, fourth and sixth in the list, beating out the big players by a fair margin.

Head of Rocket Mobile NZ, James Whittome, says the report really reinforces the brand’s best value position within the NZ mobile market.

“We’ve already won Best Value Mobile Provider at the NZ Compare Awards for the past two years. Having all four of our unlimited plans ranked at the top of this ComCom list really highlights how other providers are overcharging consumers for mobile data.”

The annual report, which looks at the state of Aotearoa’s telco sector, found that even though Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) market share had increased by 61 percent year on year, it still only comprised 2.5 percent of total mobile connections.

At the same time, MVNOs typically offer the same inclusions for lower prices than the Mobile Network Operators (MNOs). Despite the potential savings consumers can make by switching providers, the report also found that 63 percent of Kiwis have been with the same provider for over 5 years, up from 60 percent the previous year. Only 5 percent of Kiwis had switched providers in the last 12 months.

“Cost of living is at the forefront of Kiwis’ minds at the moment, so switching to a better value plan should be a no brainer. Yet there’s still a misconception that it’s a difficult process.”

“The only way we’re going to see some real change and more competitive prices in the mobile market is if more consumers move to MVNOs like us. Since we launched, we’ve already seen some big telcos respond by slightly increasing data inclusions on selected plans, but overall they’re still relying on inertia to keep the status quo.”

“This ComCom report should be a wakeup call to Kiwi consumers that they’re still paying too much for their data, and there’s no reason to keep it that way when you can switch and get the same or even more, for less money.”

With rising mobile data usage rates, Whittome is confident more consumers will consider MVNOs for lower cost mobile plans, especially when technologies like eSIM enables easy switching within minutes.

All of Rocket Mobile’s plans are eSIM ready, new customers can bring their number for free and sign up with no credit checks, contracts or early termination fees.

Capped vs Unlimited Data Plans Explained

Capped vs Unlimited Data Plans, Explained

Would you rather go to an all-you-can-eat buffet, or choose from an a la carte menu?
Since we launched, Rocket Mobile has been all about pushing the benefits of unlimited mobile data, and the freedom that comes with it.
But what if you don’t actually need to use a lot of data? Or you simply don’t want to spend more than twenty bucks a month on your phone plan?

What are capped plans?

Capped plans give you a set amount of data per month for a set price – what you see is what you get. Unlike our unlimited lineup, our capped plans give you just enough data for your needs, so you can pay less if you use less.
Usually the cheaper capped plans on the market limit your minutes. Our capped plans still come with unlimited calls and SMS messages to NZ and Australia, so you can carry on enjoying unlimited connectivity with friends and family.
Like all our other plans, you’ll also have free voicemail access, and no sneaky stuff like 28 day billing and card surcharges, or long contracts and credit checks.

Double Data Deal

For a limited time only, grab our $17 capped plan and get 3GB of data for the first 12 months, followed by 1.5GB. We’ve made our double data deal better than other providers’, by making it last for a full 12 months instead of just a couple of billing cycles.
Don’t forget, our plans last a full month instead of just 28 days, so make sure you’re comparing apples with apples when you’re looking at different plans.

Which type of plan is right for me?

If you’re usually on wifi at home, at school or at work, a capped plan might give you just enough max speed data to keep you connected while you’re out and about. With our cheapest capped plan priced at under $20 a month, it’s a great way to save for those who are budget-conscious.
Paying for your child’s plan? Our $17 capped plan is an economical option for limiting their data usage, while unlimited minutes and SMS messages mean they can still always call or text you when they need to. If you’d rather they never run out of data, try Rocket Starter, with up to 2Mbps of unlimited mobile data.
If you’re always on the go, streaming videos on your commute, and constantly running out of data on a capped plan, then you’re probably better off on an unlimited plan.

How can I know how much data I might need?

Here’s a handy guide to how much data different apps might use.
YouTube:
  • SD: 0.3 GB to 0.7 GB per hour
  • HD (720p to 1080p): 1.5 GB to 3 GB per hour
  • 4K: Up to 7 GB per hour
Spotify:
  • Data usage: 0.5 MB to 2 MB per minute
  • Hourly usage: Up to 150 MB at highest quality

Live streaming:

  • SD: 0.5 GB to 1.5 GB per hour
  • HD: 2-3 GB per hour
  • 4K: 7-8 GB per hour

What if I run out of data?

There might be the odd occasion where you suddenly need a bit more than the data amount in your capped plan. Maybe you’re on a trip, or your wifi randomly stopped working.

If you’re on a capped plan, we’ve built our max speed data add-ons to tide you over until your next bill. However, if you find that you keep running out every month, you should consider switching to an unlimited plan, so you never have to worry about running out again.

What if I need more payment flexibility?

If you budget by the week, we even have both capped and unlimited data plans that bill weekly instead of monthly, so you can have even more control on when you pay.
If you’ve been thinking about switching to Rocket Mobile, but hesitated because you didn’t want to spend more than $20 a month, or pay for data you might not use on an unlimited plan, check out our capped plans now to see if one’s right for you.

Rocket Mobile Bags Best Value Mobile Provider Win for Second Year Running at the 2024 NZ Compare Awards

Rocket Mobile Bags Best Value Mobile Provider Win for Second Year Running at the 2024 NZ Compare Awards

Hot off the heels from celebrating the brand’s first birthday, Rocket Mobile have secured the title of Best Value Mobile Provider in the NZ Compare Awards for the second year in a row, after winning the title for the first time under their previous brand.

Rocket Mobile NZ’s Head of Mobile, James Whittome, says the win is clear validation that doing data differently from the bigger mobile providers is the way forward for the Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO).

“Since we rebranded to Rocket Mobile late last year, we’ve gone from strength to strength, with thousands of Kiwis jumping on board our unlimited mobile plans. In the past year we’ve introduced eSIM, which lets you activate in minutes and makes it easier than ever to switch, as well as group plans, to unlock even more value.”

“We’re always looking to deliver the best value mobile plans to our customers, so it’s fantastic to have that recognised by the industry,” says Whittome.

NZ Compare CEO Gavin Male said at the award presentation, “Rocket Mobile have come with an awesome approach, looking at what they dislike elsewhere and solving it in their offering. It’s great to see their unlimited by default offering doing so well.”

Whittome points out that while more competitors entering the mobile market is good news for consumers, there is still a lot of work to be done when it comes to getting more New Zealanders to switch to better value plans via comparison websites like NZ Compare.

“Last month, the Commerce Commission issued another report calling on telcos to do better when it comes to making sure customers aren’t being ripped off. They found that only 8 percent of consumers switch mobile providers each year, when many could be getting better value elsewhere.”

“We’re planning to launch some pretty exciting stuff in 2025, which will deliver even better value to Kiwis looking to save during these tough times. We’ll continue to keep the big telcos on their toes, and look forward to even more growth in 2025.” finishes Whittome.

How To Pick the Best Mobile Plans for your Family

How to pick the best mobile plans for your family

It’s hard enough juggling regular family life, without also spending tons of time researching every mobile provider to find the best deal for your whānau.
Luckily we’ve chipped in with this chore, so you can be sure you’re getting the best family mobile plans possible, while keeping your crew connected.

Family plan group discounts

Whether you have two or five in your household, you can save with our group plans. Just make sure there are at least two eligible plans in the group, and you’re good to go.

Pick & mix your plans

Our group discounts lets you choose different plans for different family members, so you can splurge on faster data for you, while saving on the ones for your kids – especially important if you’re still footing their phone bill.

Plans for you

We have a whole other article on picking the right plan speed, but in short, what do you usually do with your device when you’re out and about? Happy just listening to your favourite podcasts while commuting on the train? Or are you delving into super data-heavy tasks?

Either way, our multi-max offer is unbeatable in value. Enjoy max speed unlimited data for only $50 a month, saving $20 per plan per month compared to the non-group discounted price of Rocket Max. Just make sure you’re in a group with at least one other eligible plan to save.

Plans for your kids

Settled for the cheapest plan possible on another provider for your child, only to get frustrated when they chew up all the data in a day, and end up begging you for a top up before the next bill?

A great choice for first phones is Rocket Starter. For only $1 per day, your child will have unlimited data at up to 2Mbps max speed. That means you’ll always be able to reach them on Whatsapp or Messenger, and use location sharing if needed. Just remember Starter isn’t included in our Group discounts, so you’ll need your partner or another child on Rocket, Plus or Max to become eligible.

For older kids, a faster plan like Rocket or Plus is perfect for doing it all, while still being affordable compared to other providers’ similarly priced capped plans. They can even have their own account and payment card loaded, so they’re responsible for their own phone bill, while everyone shares the benefits of group discounts within the family.

You don’t have to live in the same household to enjoy group benefits, so even if they’ve flown the coop to go off to uni, you can still stay in the same group to grab a discount.

Rocket Mobile Group Plans Set to Break Barriers for Kiwis

Rocket Mobile Group Plans Set to Break Barriers for Kiwis

Group plans are now available on Rocket Mobile, NZ’s first MVNO to offer unlimited mobile data plans at different speeds.
NZ Head of Mobile, James Whittome, says Rocket Mobile’s group plan offering is completely new to the market in terms of its lack of barriers.
“We’ve always done mobile a bit differently to the big boys, and group plans are no exception. Most providers only either offer discounts on the companion plans, force everyone to stick to the same plan, have them all billed on the same account and payment card, require credit checks, bundling with other utilities, the list goes on.”
“We take away all of the pain by giving a discount to everyone in the group on an eligible plan, allowing customers to pick and mix their plans, and keep separate accounts. You can do it all yourself through our website, without having to call or go into a store.”

A recent Commerce Commission report found that 98.4% of New Zealanders are still with one of the big three Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), despite the fact that the country has the second highest price per GB for data, out of those included in the study.

Whittome says despite rising costs, consumers can pressure the industry by shopping around, voting with their wallet and switching to MVNOs like Rocket Mobile.
“People should take a good hard look at their mobile bill, and check whether they’re actually getting the best bang for their buck, especially when they have more than one plan with the same provider. Our new group plans make it easy to save, whether it’s with your family, flat or even frenemies.”

Group Plans

Rocket Mobile Group Plans Explained

Whether you call it a group plan, family plan or companion plan, they’re all ways mobile providers encourage you to have more than one connection. Whether you get into a group with your family, friends, flatmates or frenemies, you can benefit from Rocket Mobile group discounts.
Read on to find out how Rocket Mobile group plans work, and how we’re different to other providers.

Who gets a group discount?

If you’re in a group and there are two or more active Rocket, Plus or Max plans, everyone on those eligible plans will get a discount, not just the companion plans. There are big savings to be had, so it pays to create or join a group if you can.

Group plans with no sneaky stuff

At Rocket Mobile, we’re all about doing things differently, and that of course includes group plans. Here’s how we’ve made it easier to enjoy group discounts, compared to other providers.

Group leaders aren’t forced to pay full price

We don’t force the group leader to pay full price while only the companion plans get the discount, forcing leaders to awkwardly ask for money back to even things out. We reckon it’s the fairest way to keep your fleet going.

Pick & mix the plans to suit

We get it, different strokes for different folks. Just because Rockey wants a max speed plan to make the most of his shiny 5G phone, doesn’t mean Rosey has to pay for the top tier one too when she’s perfectly happy with Rocket. Group members can be on different priced plans and still get a discount, as long as there are 2+ eligible plans in the group.

No need to call or go into store

We Kiwis love to DIY, and that’s why we’ve made it easy to form, join and add plans to your group, all by yourself. Some providers force you to call them and most likely wait on hold for ages, or schlep to a store, to get their group discounts. All you need to do to form or join a Rocket Mobile group is login to your MyAccount or app, and go into the Mobile Groups section of My Rocket.

No credit checks

Since all our plans are pay upfront (i.e. prepay), you don’t need to pass a credit check to sign up, activate, and start enjoying your group discount.

eSIM ready

We make it fast to get your unlimited data fix with eSIM. All our plans can be activated in minutes right after you sign up online, so you don’t have to wait days for a physical SIM to be delivered. It’s also easy to have multiple SIMs in your phone so you can switch between your personal and work plans. You can even use Rocket Mobile as your dedicated data-only SIM, while keeping your other SIM for voice and SMS.

Bye-bye bundle requirements

Certain multisaver promos look great on the surface, until you realise you have to buy power and/or internet with the same provider to qualify for the discount. At Rocket Mobile, you’ll save even when you only have your mobile plan with us.

You’re in control

Put multiple connections within your own account into a group, or buddy up with friends who have their own accounts. Everyone keeps their separate payment method, billing date and plan allowances, while enjoying the group discount.

Setting up a group

Simply go into the Mobile Groups section of your MyAccount or app (under My Rocket), and start inviting other Rocket Mobile connections to your group by entering their phone number. Your group will be formed after the first person you invite accepts your invitation.
Make sure you tell them you’ve invited them, and that they’ve accepted to form the group before your next bill, so you get the discount ASAP.
Any Rocket Mobile connection can be in a group, however group discounts will only be applied if there are two or more eligible plans in the group.

So what are you waiting for? Grab your buddies and start saving with a group plan today.

Rocket Mobile Launches eSIM in NZ

Rocket Mobile Launches eSIM in NZ

eSIM is now available on Rocket Mobile, a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) using One NZ’s network.
Rocket Mobile NZ’s Head of Product and Marketing, James Whittome, says it’s a game changer for Kiwis who want instant access to NZ’s best value mobile plans (NZ Compare Awards 2023).
“Since we launched Rocket Mobile in November last year, heaps of Kiwis have hopped on board our unlimited mobile data plans. eSIM will fuel our growth even further, making it even easier to ditch data caps, and overpriced plans that restrict your usage.”
eSIM stands for ‘embedded SIM card’, which allows customers to buy and activate a mobile plan within minutes. This removes the need to wait days for a physical SIM to be delivered, or visit a retail store. They can choose a new number or transfer their existing one.
“We already took away the barriers of credit checks and having to provide photo ID. Along with no long contracts, no sneaky stuff like voicemail fees and card payment surcharges, and no 28 day billing which means paying your bill 13 times a year, we’re showing New Zealand that mobile plans don’t have to be a rip off.”
“With eSIM, Kiwis can instantly switch to a plan that gives them more for less. If you’re on the road and about to run out of data, instead of being forced to pay extra for a data add-on, you can instantly switch to a Rocket Mobile plan on eSIM, and never have to worry about data limits again.”
With surging numbers of new arrivals into the country, eSIM is perfect for those who want to easily connect to a local network provider without delay.
“Land at the airport, buy, activate a Rocket Mobile eSIM, and get an unlimited data plan on a local network – all before your bags are out at the luggage carousel. Anyone can enjoy instant connectivity at an affordable price, without ever having to set foot in a store.”
There are also benefits for those wanting the convenience of being able to switch between different phone numbers using the same device, such as a work and personal number.
An eSIM compatible phone is required for the feature, and the majority of recently released smartphones are likely to be eSIM compatible. Customers can see if their device can accept an eSIM by checking with their manufacturer.

eSIM Explained

eSIM Explained

eSIM has landed at Rocket Mobile. Here’s what you need to know in a nutshell.

What is eSIM?

eSIM is short for ‘embedded SIM’. Instead of a physical SIM that you get delivered, and put into your phone’s SIM slot, an eSIM is entirely virtual, and gets loaded into your phone digitally.

Why should I get eSIM?

When you sign up for a physical SIM, it can take a few days to get delivered to your address. With an eSIM, you can decide on your plan, purchase and enjoy your unlimited data plan in a matter of minutes.
eSIM makes it super easy to connect, because you don’t have to go into a physical store, or show a photo ID for a credit check to activate. Just follow the prompts on your device and you’ll be good to go.
Like all Rocket Mobile plans, you can bring your existing number with you. An eSIM lets you easily switch between numbers, e.g. if you have separate work and personal numbers.

What makes eSIM eco-friendly?

No more plastic SIM cards, and lower carbon footprint thanks to no more physical deliveries to your door. It’s clear that eSIM is the more environmentally friendly option.

Is my device eSIM compatible?

Most phones released since 2020 are eSIM compatible. If you’re not sure, go to your phone’s mobile settings and look for ‘SIM manager’ or an option to add an eSIM. You can also check with your manufacturer, or try googling your phone model and ‘eSIM’.

How do I get eSIM working on my phone?

All you need to do is pick ‘eSIM’ when buying your plan, and scan the QR code with the device you’d like the eSIM installed on.
You can either take a photo of the QR code while it’s displayed on another device (e.g. a computer), or take a screenshot of the QR code on your phone, then use your gallery app to open the image and follow the link in the code.
Make sure you have wifi or a data connection to download the eSIM.
Once it’s installed, activation is as easy as if you’re using a physical SIM. Just click the link in the SMS you’re sent, and follow the instructions to sign in, and confirm your plan. You can transfer your existing number, or get a new one from us.
For more detailed instructions, check out our handy video about eSIM, and our help page.

Rocket Mobile Launched in New Zealand

Rocket Mobile Launched in New Zealand

Rocket Mobile is a new Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) brand dedicated to helping Kiwis take their mobile data for granted, and stop them from overpaying for mobile plans.
Head of Product and Marketing James Whittome says there is huge potential for more Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) to operate in the country, which will increase competition and bring down costs for all New Zealand mobile users.
“Rocket Mobile has landed. With the busy Christmas retail period just around the corner, it’s the perfect time for Kiwis to shop around for the best deal when it comes to mobile data, and our unlimited plans enable users to stay connected without disruption, wherever they’re holidaying in the country” says Whittome.
“Instead of sucking people in with short term half price signup offers, and bundle prices you can only access if you buy other services like power, we have everyday low prices.”
The company will operate on an ‘upfront mobile’ model, where customers pay in advance each month using a credit or debit card, like popular music and video streaming services.
“Some providers call this ‘prepay’, but we think that’s confusing as ‘prepay’ sometimes comes with catches and nasty surprises which cause you to either pay more than budgeted, or get cut off. Upfront mobile means the price you see is the price you pay.”
“This new approach also means we no longer need to conduct credit checks to activate an account. Anyone with a valid debit or credit card can purchase a plan. We know having to provide photo ID has been a pain point for some customers, so we’re happy to remove that barrier.”
Rocket Mobile is also calling out other mobile providers who tack on card fees, MMS overage and voicemail charges, or add in extra costs with a 28 day billing cycle which effectively creates an extra month of fees each year.
“Many Kiwis are really struggling, and we’re saying enough’s enough when it comes to sneaky fees. So many providers rely on consumer complacency to not look around for a better deal. The Commerce Commission has already called this out, and we urge all New Zealanders to look carefully at what’s out there, make the switch to us, and start saving,” adds Whittome.
Formerly providing mobile services under the MyRepublic brand, this will become Rocket Mobile from 23 November 2023.
“Since we launched mobile last year, we’ve been showing Kiwis how we do data differently, by offering unlimited mobile plans that never stop, or slow down to an unusable speed.”
“We were the first in New Zealand to deliver unlimited data mobile plans at various speeds, and we introduced the country’s cheapest unlimited mobile data plan at launch with our $25 per month Starter plan. Our new Rocket Mobile brand reaffirms our proposition to Kiwi consumers.”
“We knew we wanted to retain and grow our mobile business in New Zealand. What better way to pick our new brand than asking our loyal customer base directly? ‘Rocket Mobile’ shot ahead by a mile, leaving all the alternatives in the dust.”
“Unlike bigger companies, our rebrand comes at no extra cost to customers, since there are no expensive retail fitouts or other physical materials to swap out,” adds Whittome.
Singapore-based MyRepublic CEO Malcolm Rodrigues says he sees a lot of potential in the New Zealand mobile market. “We’re investing in the launch of Rocket Mobile because we believe in growing our mobile business in New Zealand. Our small but ambitious Kiwi team has been working hard to shake things up, and offer something truly novel to the market.”
“We have even more exciting offers up our sleeve on the horizon, which are really going to turn the traditional ways of doing telecommunications upside down,” says Rodrigues.

Rocket Mobile NZ operates on One NZ’s award winning network, with coverage of more than 98.5% of the country’s population and 5G access..

The company will continue to operate as MyRepublic for broadband and mobile services in other markets such as Singapore.
